Phonics and Reading

Phonics

Within the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 we learn to recognise sounds within words through phonics. We use Little Wandle phonic programme

Our phonics lessons use a reviewing, teaching, practising and applying structure. The children review previously taught sounds, learn new sounds within the teaching, practise using these within reading and writing then apply these new skills to an activity. Within phonics we use fun and fast activities to motivate and engage the children within their learning. We use interactive games, whiteboard activities, flashcards, word lists and practical resources to teach new sounds.

Reading

We are very proud of our Reading ethos at Yearsley Grove Primary School. We encourage all children to be readers, through introducing the children to exciting and stimulating texts. We have a wonderful library, that is open every lunch time and all children are invited. We have comfy cushions and sofas where children can get cosy and read a book. Developing a love of reading is high priority throughout the school.

How can you help?

We ask that you read with your children at least 3 times per week. This can be school books or a book you are sharing together. Ask the children read some aloud and then you can model this too.

For more help and guidance see your class teacher and look out for a 'How we teach Reading' parents and carers  meeting which will be coming soon.
